Garden Society Oak Tree
Published: 08 November 2024
When the Coychurch Gardening Society closed, the members voted to use the money in their funds to provide a trophy cabinet to be placed in the Williams Memorial Hall and to purchase another Oak tree. Their first Oak tree was planted in the Coychurch Play Park to mark their 25th Anniversary. This second Oak tree has now been delivered to the Coychurch Community Field and planted towards the Coychurch Road end. At a later date a notice will be put next to the tree so people will know it has been donated by the Society.
In 2019 the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology published research showing that oak trees are hugely significant for biodiversity. They are a haven for 2,300 wildlife species, providing vital spaces to eat, shelter and breed. 326 species depend on oak trees for survival and 229 species are rarely found on trees other than oaks.
Oak trees can live for a thousand years so can sustain wildlife for centuries. If you are interested in more information about the species which live on/in oak trees throughout the tree's lifetime check out the Woodland Trust page.
